Statement Accessories: Make Any Outfit Elegant

I am a lover of anything with a bold statement. That said, there’s an art form to styling a statement piece if you want it to really pop and work for you and your style. This week, I am showcasing one of my favorite statement accessories to date: the feather collar. I found this lovely gem at a local boutique, Thread Lounge, located in the Mission District of San Francisco. San Francisco is usually never synonymous with editorial fashion trends, so it came as a wonderful surprise to find this unique piece in the mix! It’s an easy piece to add to an otherwise elegant outfit, however, its a completely different feel to blend it with more casual designs.

This week, I want to talk about how to take your favorite loud statement piece and make it your own with a casual outfit of your choosing. I know my fashion looks are often rebellious and may not speak for everyone, however, that’s not my point when styling looks. What is? Teaching you to think outside the box in your own wardrobe, taking risks where you feel comfortable doing so.

Choosing The Statement Piece

The starting point to mastering this trend is to pick ONE piece that speaks to your inner self. I have always loved feather trends, from those silly yet fun feather extensions to earrings, which was an inspiration I took from Kesha back in her earlier days. I’m a free spirit at heart, and it brings my looks full circle, blending my elegance and renegade attributes to the forefront together. If feathers are your jam, try this option, and if you’re hesitant, opt for a monochrome paring like I did, black on black, letting the details shine, not just the overall piece. What’s next? Always start small: one of the biggest trends having a comeback right now are statement earrings, I’ve linked a few of my faves here, here, and here.

I started with an otherwise casual outfit, blending silk trousers with one of my favorite sporty crop tops that legit goes with everything:

Pair Your Outfit

Next, take your statement piece and add it in. Let the piece speak for itself: what I mean is to downplay your other pieces either through solids or simple designs. The solids in this outfit compliment the tones in the feather collar perfectly, bringing the whole look full circle. Still have questions? Shoot me an email, I’d love to help you strategize your statement look!

NYFW Recap: Kimonos & Vintage Tees

I’ve had so much fun rocking two of the biggest trends this year, kimonos and a good statement graphic tee. For New York Fashion Week, I rocked them both, sometimes at the same time. One of the things I love most about Fashion Week is the ability to get creative and disrupt modern trends and bring my own style to the street. This outfit, in particular, was one of my absolute favorites of the week. Sporty graphic tees are everywhere these days, from our favorite sporting brands, all the way to the runway. I wanted my sporty side to show, but also blend seamlessly with several of my favorite types of details: lace and killer shoes.

Vintage Inspired Nike T-Shirt Dress

While searching Etsy, I came across the most amazing store, URBNVTG. I was obsessed with all the amazing custom pieces, and this Nike t-shirt dress in particular. I knew I had to incorporate it into my Fashion Week outfits. I have another amazing piece too that’s coming up in a couple weeks! This Nike dress was not only insanely comfortable (think boyfriend pajama tee) but totally eye-catching. I paired it with the kimono for my third day at Fashion Week for the Lulu’s Influencer Party with a few of my fellow blogger babes!

Jaded London Oversized Festival Kimono

This killer kimono was an instant love too. I love to incorporate bright statement pieces from ASOS, as they’re always on trend regardless of what style you’re into. I adore neon anything, and this kimono definitely had to become a part of my wardrobe. From the soft velvet to the long length, it was not only comfortable but beautiful! The movement of the material made it so much fun to get photographed.

Gigi Bootie

One of my favorite pairs of shoes, the Gigi Bootie by Stuart Weitzman, were a repeat wear of the week. They go with everything, from a fancy cocktail dress all the way to this leisurely t-shirt dress look. They’re sadly sold out, but I’ve linked a few here, here, and here that will give you a similar look for you to style into your own wardrobe!

The Velvet Edit

As a lover of all things 90’s, its safe to say that I was thrilled to see velvet back on the runways at New York Fashion Week this year. When I found it being combined with track jackets, I was ecstatic! This black and crimson gem of a find at Forever21 is literally EVERYTHING right now. It’s been on repeat all week since I snagged it.

I also received a pair of leggings from The Girlfriend Collective last week, and had been dying to get a chance to test them out. I know, just when you think you don’t need yet ANOTHER pair of black leggings, hear me out: THESE. ARE. A. MUST.

From the high quality thick fabric with one hell of a buttery feel against the skin, to the literally perfect design and seam placement, these pants are hands down some of the best I’ve ever owned. Another amazing fact about them? The story behind them. Much like Everlane or Warby Parker, this brand focuses on a direct-to-consumer business model, as well as being environmentally conscious: the material is made from recycled plastic bottles. Additionally they focus on fair trade practices when it comes to manufacturing. They’re seriously amazing.

Another amazing fact? You can snag a pair for FREE with the cost of shipping ($19.95). For FREE you guys. These pants speak for themselves, and I guarantee I’ll be buying more when they officially launch.

Fenty x Puma: Urban Gothic Meets Athleisure

I’d been dying to snag a few pieces from Rihanna’s Fenty x PUMA line, as there’s nothing out there in the athleisure space that speaks to me more. Known for her avant-garde and often provocative sense of style, she’s created an athleisure collaboration that is just that: unapologetically fashion forward.

It’s been nearly a year since the collection first hit the catwalks of New York Fashion Week, and a little over a month since the collection hit retailers, and as soon as my haul arrived, I was hooked! Rihanna’s dark, urban gothic style is very similar to my own, so the blend of it with current athleisure trends was a match made in heaven.

Out of all the items in the current release, I was drawn to the Kimono the most. My other affinity when it comes to personal style tends to be inspired by Japanese trends (hello nail art!), so naturally, it’s bold shape and characters were a total draw. I’m a track jacket junkie, so it’s seamless blend of track and kimono was also a mega sell.

This jacket goes from the studio right to the street, and can even be paired with a night out ensemble. I wore it to a special event with bumble&Bumble last weekend, and it was a huge hit! Additionally, stay tuned as well for an exciting collab with bumble&Bumble, my favorite wash and wear hair product line! I’ll be sharing my product lineup/how to’s on how my hair stays so perfectly styled with one or less wash a week (these photos are a whole week!).

Also of note is my FAVE T-shirt of all time: the Express One Eleven V-Neck Tunic Tee. It’s also on sale for less than $30, so snag one now! It’s incredibly soft, versatile, and flattering on every body type. I have one in nearly every color, and take a size small.

An Unlikely Union: Florals Meet Mesh

Anyone that knows me, knows how much I despise florals. I find them often overdone, and too romantic for my personal taste of fashion. I think I own two articles of clothing with a floral pattern, one of them being this pair of Nikes. I wasn’t one of the first on the Nike Photosynthesis bandwagon, and I must say my attraction was rather recent, only deciding to take the plunge after browsing Nordstrom this weekend, and finding a single pair on sale in my size. It was fate, clearly.

There’s something about the mix of subdued blue hues that really do it for me. They are oddly versatile, which is a must in my profession, and with the magnitude of my fitness wardrobe.

The mesh pants, on the other hand, come as no surprise. You can always find one of the following styles on my body at all times when I’m in fitness wear: mesh, neon, and anything with creative reflective detail. These pants boast a racy panel all the way up to the hip, and an amazingly buttery material that gives any gal the look of a 145lb deadlifting booty. Obvious win.
