Home For The Holidays: Inside My Style & Family Tradition

Merry Christmas everyone!

There’s nothing like being home with loved ones for the holidays, am I right? Over the past 15 years living away from home due to college and my first jobs as a young professional, it’s always been a reprieve to head home for a few days to enjoy the familiar traditions of home cooked meals, Christmas mass, and spontaneous outdoor activities.

Growing up in a Catholic family, Christmas holds a very special place in our lives. It’s a time to reflect on the true spirit of the season, the first family of Christ. It’s our time to celebrate that exactly, as well as appreciate the love within our own family and those around us. They were some of my fondest memories growing up.

When it comes to my holiday Sunday best attire, I always love to incorporate a splash of fashion from the year past, blended with a piece of tradition pulled from my heritage or other foundation from my life. When I came across this jacket, I knew it needed to have a home in my closet for two reasons:

  1. I love a solid button breasted jacket. They’re just so damn sharp.
  2. Many of you may know I went to the Naval Academy for college. This jacket also bears an almost identical resemblance to our parade uniform we marched in for every national holiday. Yup, like literal marching! The formal etiquette of the military and our government has always been a part of our household and was part of my earliest memories as a child living in Washington D.C. This high collared and gold embroidered jacket brings back so many wonderful memories during the holidays.

Now, pair this jacket with some sporty and velvety splash? GAME ON bitches.

I’ve been wearing this skirt everywhere in every code of dress this season from Ivy Park crop tops to this polished look here. It’s now under $25, grab one before it’s gone for good in a few weeks! This soft pink hue is perfect year round to style up and down.

Another fun college memory surrounding our parade uniforms included trading out our usual white undershirt for one with personal flair, mine usually a track team or our class-specific shirt. I’ve been loving Nike’s tees lately, and couldn’t resist this deep red tee with metallic hues to breathe some life into my holiday look! I also added my favorite beanie of the season by Adidas, as the gold details made a perfect combo with the jacket.

I wish you all the merriest of holidays this season, whichever your faith, and wish you a wonderful and successful year ahead! This will be my last post until the New Year, and cannot wait to share with you what’s in store as I make my preparations to move East to New York later next month!

Sporty Holiday Style: Casual From Coast To Coast

The versatility of velvet this season has made casual holiday dressing so easy! If some of your holiday events are on the more casual side, try pairing your holiday skirts with a pair of statement sneakers for a funky and comfortable twist. My go-to’s this season have been my Fenty x Puma Creepers, as the cracked patent leather adds a nice touch of holiday sparkle to my often monochromatic wardrobe.

Let’s also take a second to talk about this freaking amazing sweatshirt from Cynthia Rowley…I saw it a few months ago and knew it needed to have a home in my closet! It even comes in blush too! As you know, I’ll be taking off permanently to New York City next month. No piece says it better than a hybrid California / New York top, for a few reasons:

  1. As a Northern California native, the chill outdoorsy vibe is in my blood. I have a love of exploring the great outdoors and am always looking for an excuse to wear flip-flops. I grew up living in my Adidas Adilettes, and as you can see, not much has changed. Tousled beach waves almost always win over a manicured curl, and I love a killer vintage tee over everything.
  2. As far back as I can remember, I’ve always had a love affair with New York City, watching old movies with my family, to taking off every chance I got to explore it while in college on the east coast. I’ve traveled all over, and never quite felt as much at home as I have in New York, there’s something about the people and respect for hustle there that puts me at ease. It was always a goal of mine to move there one day, as my career allowed.
  3. The edgier fashion-forward side of my style is often misunderstood here in California. I love that this sweatshirt is a true hybrid. It brings both sides together to make something new, rebellious, yet relatable. My personal style is an eclectic mix of both worlds and this sweatshirt is just that: Casual. Chic.

I picked up this awesome (and under $30) velvet skirt and must say it goes with just about everything in my closet. Target has seriously upped their clothing game over the past few years, and I’m pumped to see that their regular brand lines have gotten a huge makeover. Stay tuned the rest of this week, as I style it up and down for the holidays.

I’m also pumped to share my second #ootdnovela of the year! I couldn’t think of a better sound to back it with than a funky remix of artists from both New York City and LA (Azealia Banks vs. YACHT) by my favorite DJ group of all time, The Hood Internet. Check their mixtapes out on SoundCloud, they’re fire AF!

Sporty Holiday Style: The Iconic Red Dress

There’s nothing more holiday than the iconic red dress, am I right? I had so much fun collaborating with a few of my fellow blogger babes this season on finding the perfect red dress for the holidays. Check their posts out here:

I decided to add sporty splash this season. With athleisure and the fancy sneaker trend riding a major wave this year, it’s the perfect time to add a little funk to your holiday party getups. This year, velvet has played a major role in my styling choices, making it an easy choice for the holidays as well. I rarely buy holiday dresses or any formalwear for that matter, as it’s much easier to rent as it’s not something I’d wear more than once.

I chose to pick a piece that would be versatile across all codes of dress: the blazer dress! It makes a perfect choice for office parties and happy hours alike. Additionally, you can wear this dress open, making it easy to style for the office with leggings or jeans. I’m so pumped to use it later next year as such!

To style this dress on the sporty side, I paired it with one of my favorite ball caps. If you want a more casual look, try adding a pair of statement sneakers to the mix! I’ll be swapping out my Rockstuds for my cracked patent leather Creepers for a holiday party later this evening! If you want a little more glam, go for a statement accessory! I’ve been adding this feather collar to everything this year, from sweatshirts to dresses.
