Velvet For The Summer: Outside Lands Style (& a Nordstrom Giveaway!)

If you shopped the Nordstrom Sale with me, you know that the velvet trend is here to stay, long into the summer and fall! As a 90’s kind of gal, I cannot be more pumped about it. It was all over the runways during NYFW back in February, and its momentum hasn’t slowed down at all. That said, I’m adding into my summer outfits, and more specifically, adding it into the mix for Outside Lands. Whether you’re headed to Lollapalooza, Electric Zoo, or Outside Lands this summer, it’s an easy way to feel stylish this season!

I’ve always been envious of the amazing outfit watching that goes on at Coachella, and while I’ve never attended, I’ve always had a thing for music inspired fashion: remember my band tee obsession? Outside Lands is my chance every year to play around with my more whimsical and edgy sense of fashion, allowing myself to go all out like I do for New York Fashion Week with playful and unconventional ensembles. Not sure where to start? I’ve got you covered.

First things first…

Be a little practical.

One thing I’ve learned from 3 years of attending Outside Lands, is the need to dress somewhat practical. While I love being extra when it comes to my day to day dress code, for music festivals, I do a primary sweep of every item to make sure it’s functional enough to not ruin my day by being a distraction to my ability to enjoy taking in all the music sets.

Throws / Jackets

Since it’s San Francisco, layering is KEY. If your outfit is on the skimpier side, make sure you bring a suitable jacket or one that doubles as a blanket you can re-purpose during the warmer daylight hours. Don’t have the time or the budget to invest in a cool leather jacket? Rent one from Rent the Runway instead!

BB Dakota Black Faux Fur Draped Jacket (rent for less than $30!)

ASOS Denim Super Rip Jacket

Free People Spellbound Tie Dye Kimono

Chelsea28 Velvet Smoking Jacket  …on Anniversary Sale too!

Harvey Faircloth Peplum Camo Jacket

The bag you take WILL define your festival experience. My first year, I took I tiny cross body and was stressed as the day went on due to the lack of space for snacks, souvenirs, and my layers for later. It was miserable! The second year, I took a giant Never Full Tote and was equally miserable lugging around a bag on my shoulder all day. I now personally prefer taking a backpack, so you can have your hands free.

Rebecca Minkoff Julian Velvet Backpack (gold version here)  …both are on Anniversary Sale too!

Herschel Reflective Mini Backpack

The Rack Addik Fanny Pack

Second cardinal sin: wearing impractical shoes. Trust me. I’m the queen of crazy shoes, and hear me out: THIS IS NOT the time to show them off. I wore sandals my first year, which was a fail. The second year, I wisened up and dug out my clunky All Saints leather high tops, and was SO happy. Go for a high top style, given the amount of grass and dirt you’ll be trekking through all day. This is San Francisco, and it’s cold (and often wet!) in August.

Dr. Martens Orchid Purple Zip Pascal Boots

Vans Sk8 High Tops

I am going to be wearing this insanely comfortable (and Instagrammable!) Kimono from the Nordstrom Sale, and highly suggest you take a peek at yourself! It’s a great item to layer with, and one that’s transitional between seasons given the velvet and short sleeve qualities. It flows so beautifully, and was an instant love the second I tried it on out of my first wave of sale shipments!

The Velvet Edit

As a lover of all things 90’s, its safe to say that I was thrilled to see velvet back on the runways at New York Fashion Week this year. When I found it being combined with track jackets, I was ecstatic! This black and crimson gem of a find at Forever21 is literally EVERYTHING right now. It’s been on repeat all week since I snagged it.

I also received a pair of leggings from The Girlfriend Collective last week, and had been dying to get a chance to test them out. I know, just when you think you don’t need yet ANOTHER pair of black leggings, hear me out: THESE. ARE. A. MUST.

From the high quality thick fabric with one hell of a buttery feel against the skin, to the literally perfect design and seam placement, these pants are hands down some of the best I’ve ever owned. Another amazing fact about them? The story behind them. Much like Everlane or Warby Parker, this brand focuses on a direct-to-consumer business model, as well as being environmentally conscious: the material is made from recycled plastic bottles. Additionally they focus on fair trade practices when it comes to manufacturing. They’re seriously amazing.

Another amazing fact? You can snag a pair for FREE with the cost of shipping ($19.95). For FREE you guys. These pants speak for themselves, and I guarantee I’ll be buying more when they officially launch.

Fenty x Puma: Urban Gothic Meets Athleisure

I’d been dying to snag a few pieces from Rihanna’s Fenty x PUMA line, as there’s nothing out there in the athleisure space that speaks to me more. Known for her avant-garde and often provocative sense of style, she’s created an athleisure collaboration that is just that: unapologetically fashion forward.

It’s been nearly a year since the collection first hit the catwalks of New York Fashion Week, and a little over a month since the collection hit retailers, and as soon as my haul arrived, I was hooked! Rihanna’s dark, urban gothic style is very similar to my own, so the blend of it with current athleisure trends was a match made in heaven.

Out of all the items in the current release, I was drawn to the Kimono the most. My other affinity when it comes to personal style tends to be inspired by Japanese trends (hello nail art!), so naturally, it’s bold shape and characters were a total draw. I’m a track jacket junkie, so it’s seamless blend of track and kimono was also a mega sell.

This jacket goes from the studio right to the street, and can even be paired with a night out ensemble. I wore it to a special event with bumble&Bumble last weekend, and it was a huge hit! Additionally, stay tuned as well for an exciting collab with bumble&Bumble, my favorite wash and wear hair product line! I’ll be sharing my product lineup/how to’s on how my hair stays so perfectly styled with one or less wash a week (these photos are a whole week!).

Also of note is my FAVE T-shirt of all time: the Express One Eleven V-Neck Tunic Tee. It’s also on sale for less than $30, so snag one now! It’s incredibly soft, versatile, and flattering on every body type. I have one in nearly every color, and take a size small.

Barry’s: From the Street to the Studio

It’s been an absolute whirlwind start to the year! This blog post is grossly overdue, and I cannot express how excited I am to get back to my regular routine of doing what I love most: blogging.

This year marked the beginning of a full time teaching schedule at Barry’s Bootcamp, coupled with my current career training and writing. That said, I have been on the move, with little time to fit in all my passions. Over the past few months, I have had the chance to pioneer an athleisure styling column with Barry’s on their blog, The Intel.

I have since styled two outfits, one for each collection released this year. You can find out more here!

My favorite collection and outfit to date is the one I styled this past week: our “Leather & Lace” collection. I am in love with this Split59 tank, and wear it everywhere, including styled into some of my nighttime looks out on the town here in San Francisco. It’s an incredibly transitional piece, especially for being so racy!

I am also currently obsessed with Allbirds! If you haven’t heard of them, you definitely will shortly! They are taking over the world of fitness and lifestyle wear, and I cannot be more excited by it! The model is 100% wool, making them washable and resilient to odor. They are the perfect blend of fitness function and urban chic athleisure, and have survived multiple Barry’s classes and workouts, and still look pristine. If my shoes (and feet!) can survive a week of powering down the Barry’s tread, they can handle anything.

I was first introduced to them by one of my private training clients, who heads up their marketing, and helped them launch. They are a San Francisco based brand, and are some of the coolest people I’ve met in the industry of fashion/fitness/outdoor enthusiasts. Follow them here on Instagram.

Buyers beware: grab your favorite colorways before they sell out, as colors will not be released again! These gorgeous blue runners are sold out unfortunately, however, there are three other colors currently available on the website.

Fall Beach Day Essentials

This past week has been brisk and a bit windy, and I am loving every second of it. The overcast skies soften the city, giving it that crisp but cozy holiday feeling, allowing me to finally snuggle up in my favorite jackets and blanket scarves. I spent the day hiking out to Ocean Beach on Saturday morning, enjoying the sounds of the ocean and the crisp air along the trails of Lands End down to the beach.

I am currently obsessed with Target’s activewear line C9 by Champion, as their outerwear this season is gorgeous on top of being functional. I picked up their fleece jacket that was somewhat similiar to my Patagonia Better Sweater, and I must say the comparison is completely on point.

Not only is it longer (tall girl problems!) in the body, the collar is wider, which helps when it’s windy. It’s a less boxy fit, and makes me feel feminine when I am bulked up in warm layers.

One of my favorite tank styles is the Fly-By Tank by Under Armour. Aside from it’s flattering fit, I love that the back is mesh which allows for quick sweat wicking, and overall comfort. It comes in just about every color out there, so there’s bound to be one to match any outfit you’ve got. Thanks to my friend Shauna for the recommendation!

I found these sandals on mega clearance at Target, and I must say they are amazingly comfortable and still fashionable. They’re exactly what I need to take my beach day back into the real world for either dining out or shopping. Goodbye rubber flip flops!

Athluxe: San Francisco Made

There’s nothing I love more than wearing bold or avant-garde fashions, especially when they are in the form of spandex. Products get extra style points if they can blur the lines with my daytime or nighttime outfits. I had the pleasure of meeting one of San Francisco’s own activewear designers during San Francisco Fashion Week this year, Svetlana of Be Bold Activewear. I was instantly obsessed with the style (and QUALITY!) of her staple design, the Tank Into the Future tank. It’s functional enough to work out in and fits seamlessly into my day to day fashion. It is extremely flattering: Its slimming waistline and baggier top half make for a feminine fit, accentuating your body in all the right places, regardless of your body type. It’s especially amazing for gals that are top heavy; your chest

It is extremely flattering: It’s slimming waistline and baggier top half make for a feminine fit, accentuating your body in all the right places, regardless of your body type. It’s especially amazing for gals that are top heavy; your chest won’t be smashed into it, causing an unflattering and asymmetrical fit.

I tested this top out while teaching class at Barry’s Bootcamp, and LOVED how it performed. The slimmer fit at the hem kept it in place when I demonstrated exercises and bounced around the room cheering my clients on. I have worked out in it since, and feel the same. This tank and other amazing products are up for pre-sale now on the site, reserve yours now!

An Unlikely Union: Florals Meet Mesh

Anyone that knows me, knows how much I despise florals. I find them often overdone, and too romantic for my personal taste of fashion. I think I own two articles of clothing with a floral pattern, one of them being this pair of Nikes. I wasn’t one of the first on the Nike Photosynthesis bandwagon, and I must say my attraction was rather recent, only deciding to take the plunge after browsing Nordstrom this weekend, and finding a single pair on sale in my size. It was fate, clearly.

There’s something about the mix of subdued blue hues that really do it for me. They are oddly versatile, which is a must in my profession, and with the magnitude of my fitness wardrobe.

The mesh pants, on the other hand, come as no surprise. You can always find one of the following styles on my body at all times when I’m in fitness wear: mesh, neon, and anything with creative reflective detail. These pants boast a racy panel all the way up to the hip, and an amazingly buttery material that gives any gal the look of a 145lb deadlifting booty. Obvious win.
