Music Is My Best Friend: A New Movement

For those of you that know me well, you know how important music is in my life. I’ve been surrounded by it since birth, and it’s integrated into every area of my life in some shape or form. It’s what motivates me, what helps me unwind, and what helps me see deeper into every corner of life. Before we get into the good stuff, I’ll start this post off with a couple music-related facts about myself you may not know:

Mandy + Music

  1. I trained professionally as a singer for most of my life, from high school through college.
  2. I live for all things musical theatre.
  3. I love creating new mixes of music, from the ancient mixtape back in the 90’s to today, remixing my favorite songs DJ style. Find my playlists on Spotify and Soundcloud and follow along!
  4. I love writing lyrics and sometimes even tunes.

Why music?

I’m an artist at my core. I like to integrate uncommon things to tell a story. Music has also been a way to connect deeper with my group fitness students, and a way to amp up a fun night with friends. Anyone else take a moment throughout the day to settle in with your fave song of the moment to reflect and get inspired? I’m talking about those super inspiring daydreams that motivate is to dance around in our PJs at home, or rock out to our own music video in our head. We have ALL been there. That’s where I became inspired to create this new way of sharing inspiration through a collaboration of some of the things I love most: music, fashion, and art. It’s a way to bring that daydream music video into flesh and blood.

This Thanksgiving, I am grateful for so many things, and one of them is music. Like family and friends, it is a best friend to me. Music at its core has always been a way to come together with others on the common ground of love. Now more than ever, we need that in life. This video was a way for me to unite some of my favorite brands that are breaking the mold of modern fashion, to a new kind of collaborative music as showcased by one of my favorite new musical artists, Sofi Tukker. Their original remix of alternative rock vibes and electronic beats inspire me in so many ways, to include the way I look at fashion. Their track Best Friend spoke to me in this way: fashion and music will be a part of my life always and speaks its own special language to me.

Meet the #OOTDnovela

Meet a new way to bring things together: the #OOTDnovela. It’s a collaboration of the things I love most, and I hope this video inspires you to collaborate with others and bring together your own love story across all avenues in life. This will become a new monthly staple on the blog, so stay tuned for more fashion and music collabs later this holiday season! I’ll leave all of you with this: is there a song that inspires you? Something you’d like to see in this style? Email me! Let’s collab.

Parisian Urban Gothic: My Inner Lagerfeld

When it comes to my fashion loves, first, there are my favorite designers, and then there’s some that simply connect with my soul. My first experience with Karl Lagerfeld was in my early childhood, playing around in my parent’s bathroom, sampling their perfume and cologne. As long as I can remember, my dad wore Lagerfeld. Now, looking back, it’s apparent that my dad and I have more in common when it comes to fashion and what inspires us. It’s often stated that our sense of smell is one of our most powerful senses, and I believe it. The original cologne by Lagerfeld will always bring back memories of special events and the holidays spent with family, and my early obsession with all things editorial. It’s a scent that was revolutionary for its time, having a very distinct edgy take on elegance.

I remember looking up his name as a kid and instantly falling in love with his style and his view on fashion. He’s an icon of Parisian fashion and style, but not a native Parisian, or even French. Crazy right? Paris is renowned for being one of the most snooty cities in the world, especially when it comes to fashion. How’d he do it? A little history lesson for you: originally from Germany, his career in French fashion began while working for Balmain. After settling into his own with his first official compilation with Jean Patou, he didn’t exactly start off on the right foot and actually got booed by the press. Did that stop him? Fuck no.

I’m a firm believer in the sentiment that well-behaved women rarely make history, and it’s true of men too, including Lagerfeld. His urban gothic approach to couture brings new life to Parisian style, and I have never been happier that he’s the creative director of Chanel these days. He’s now one of the most respected designers in French fashion, with the city of Paris standing with him season after season, and some my favorite style muses, Cara Delavigne.  Without the ability to question popular trends, we cannot evolve. The rule breakers pave the way to the future, and it’s what I love most about his essence. This past season’s Chanel show was soul captivating, bringing so much urban edge to a very soft and feminine season, Spring/Summer 2018. One of my fashion muses, Courtney of Always Judging, SLAYED this take on Chanel vibe perfectly.

Urban Gothic Pairings

Fall is my favorite season to style, as you can become more creative through transitional layers that incorporate the best of every other season (hello layering statement blouses under dresses!). I am obsessing over the entire Moto Collection by Carbon38, and was pumped to sample some of the best selling pieces this past September! I also found this amazing yet simple hat at Target and knew it would be the perfect combo to soften my usually edgy approach to styling. It plays so well with my current wardrobe, and can’t wait to add it to my outfits later this season.

Urban Gothic Accessory Pairings

Furthermore: if you’ve been on the edge about buying an Apple Watch thinking that its ROI is low due to the fact that it’s super sporty, think again. You can make technology and sportier styles both feminine and elegant, especially in today’s world of athleisure and the creation of technical fabric. I cannot get enough of my new watch bands from Bezels & Bytes. The rose gold studs instantly grabbed me and reminded me so much of Karl Lagerfeld’s take on Chanel.

Shorts For Fall: How To Master The Trend

It comes as no secret that San Francisco has a serious Indian Summer. That said, how do you conquer fall feels with summer weather? It’s all about the layering. I know layering sounds like it would just make you even more overheated, but hear me out. Cooler layers, that is: I like to mix fall fabrics like leather and sheer legwear with summer styles. I’ve been reaching for these faux leather shorts all season, as they go with pretty much anything you can imagine: plaid flannels, turtlenecks, and my favorite mule slides, which are all fall appropriate.

The easiest way to transition your warmer weather pieces into fall includes a great set of statement hose, my personal favorite being fishnets. They won’t cause you to overheat, yet give you that fall-ready approach to styling. Since it’s been extra hot in San Francisco, and here in New York during Fashion Week, I opted for my larger patterned fishnets to give it a covered yet comfortable feel. For an extra pop of fall fashion, trade your sandals for a pair of fun suede booties or over-the-knee boots.

Since it’s been super warm here in the city, I opted for my new favorite mule slides from Nordstrom, and trading my favorite summer bags for this amazing velvet backpack for an added touch of fall feels! I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too sure how much I’d use this backpack given the size, however, it’s proved to be a useful staple this past month since I picked it up at the Nordstrom Anniversary sale. It holds a surprising amount of stuff: it fit my large Canon DSLR (with a huge lens!) alongside my iPhone 6s Plus, wallet, sunglasses case, and more!

Menswear: The Trend To Watch For Fall (& A Giveaway!)

We just saw Gigi rock the menswear trend in Vogue’s August issue, so it’s guaranteed to be trending for the foreseeable future, and just in time for my favorite fashion season of the year, fall! If you’ve been following along for a bit now, you may know that I recently transitioned back into the corporate technology industry, so it’s been super exciting to dress up for work again and have the opportunity to play around with my personal style, especially when it comes to business dress. Having spent the last three years fully immersed in the fitness world, and many years before as an active fashion addict, I gained an appreciation for comfortably functional clothing, and it’s a facet I weave into my everyday style regardless of where I’m headed these days.

I rarely talk about an item three times in a row, so when I do, you know it’s serious. I have found one of the world’s hidden blouse gems: a collared button down that acts like a workout top but looks like your office top. Seriously. ADAY is changing the way we edit our closets, helping us live a more minimal life when it comes to our wardrobe, creating pieces that can travel with you, put up with your sweat, and be fancy enough to street style or mix into your day to day office attire! It’s the most worn piece of my wardrobe this past season, and it’s carrying over into fall for New York Fashion Week starting tomorrow!

For Fashion Week this year, I am incorporating some pant suit combos into my sporty aesthetic for a unique twist on the menswear trend. I’m also excited to mix in my personal urban gothic style as well and was pumped to start adding in unique tights and sexier undergarments for a touch of glam with an extra edge. You’ll have to wait for the final lineup, so stay tuned for my Instagram stories this week and for my upcoming posts during the week chronicling my second season. Even if you’re not hitting the runway shows, you can rock the trend in your daily wardrobe and out on the town with these simple hacks:

Suit up.

Find a statement blazer to instantly transform any outfit you’re wearing. Looser styles are totally on trend right now, so play with your layers, mixing tighter tops or dresses with a looser jacket to give it that gender neutral feel. If you’re a lover of more fitted styles, opt for a monochrome pantsuit and play with texture and patterns when it comes to the interior of your outfit.

Magnify your accessories.

I am a lover of men’s watches; most of my watches are actually a men’s style! If you’re not feeling the suited up look, or if it’s as hot as it has been recently in San Francisco, accessories are your game changer. Add in oversized accessories like thicker belts and buckles, statement loafers, and ties. I personally love wearing men’s style sneakers, and adding them into my work and street styles!

This week, I went for a more audacious look, showcasing one of my favorite active wear brands, Michi. The Feline Bra was my first Michi purchase, and I’ve been hooked ever since! There are so many styles that are perfect for adding an element of sexiness to your look and wearing my ADAY blouse open allowed me to show off a little more of my edgier personal aesthetic.

Don’t miss some of my favorite gems from this year’s summer sale! *cough* Adidas Stan Smiths *COUGH*

I put together this transitional look for San Francisco’s Indian summer we have nearly every year: pants for cooler mornings/work, and a pair of faux leather shorts to change into for those warm summer evenings. When it gets a little warm in the city, my Something Borrowed Shirt by ADAY is a favorite given its sweat wicking properties. Throw a blazer over it to give it that polished fancy feel for the office, or go without it and add shorts to the mix for a quick transition to happy hour!

Your New Favorite Blouse For The Office

Ever feel like your office wardrobe is the least comfortable (and/or fashionable) corner of your closet? Worse yet: feel like you have to maintain two separate wardrobes for work/life? Yeah, I was with you about three years ago. Luckily to our advantage, work wear is beginning to get a mind blowing makeover these days! I’m referring to the fact that our most favorite fabrics (stretchy pants anyone?) are making their way into our standard office friendly designs, and I’ll make sure you’re not missing any of it!

As many of you know from my Instagram stories and posts, I got the chance to meet the ADAY team, and get a deeper understanding of the story behind the brand during their Simplicity Tour last month. I’ve followed them for a while, loving their fresh new approach to transitional clothing. Gone are the days of sneaking our workout leggings into our business casual: some brands are beginning to make designs that are truly meant to be appropriate for both (say goodbye to the logo shame of your older leggings!). ADAY is one of them, and their Something Borrowed Shirt is literally my favorite piece on the planet for work.

It goes without saying I have shit loads of spandex, and most of them aren’t quite office or casual ready. This poses two problems: I have more clothing (which stresses me out), and have to maintain an almost completely separate wardrobe for every stage of my life. Sound familiar?

Now: imagine a world where you can throw your office blouse in the same load as your workout clothes. Sound totally and completely ridic? Get ready to have your mind blown: ADAY has created a truly transitional and fuss free blouse that you need to try ASAP. I’m not even kidding: think silk that acts like spandex! Kiss that dry cleaning bill goodbye and trade your usual work top for one of these. It’s honestly one of the most comfortable button downs I’ve ever worn, and if you hate having to wrestle yourself into your daily work tops, trade them for this!

I paired it with my favorite slacks, the Tommaso Pant, and the most comfortable slides I’ve ever worn, these amazing silver loafers from the Nordstrom sale! If you’re looking for slides that don’t require the painful break in, these are it. I can’t wait to get another pair in another color!
